Let us set out here what
we can understand by the terms distance or distributed learning and online
learning
Distance or distributed mode simply means that the primary
place of learning is distal from the teacher/instructor/campus/classroom.
The course materials are accessed by the student away from
the teacher the actual study undertaken will probably be the home or workplace
and in special cases learning posts.
The actual materials may be taken as downloads, or by
attachments , they can also be posted out to the student in a variety of media
ranging from hard copy, through dvd to being on a memory stick
Therefore in distance mode the study may or may not be
online
However, with online learning itself there is the clear
implication that no other form of delivery other than the materials
being available online
This can again be split into whether the materials are
simply available to the student at a web address or stored on a computer hard
drive to be accessed when the learner so requires, or whether the materials are
only available in real time via a teacher projection or by similar means
