Setting up a Web Site

There are basically three steps to settiing up a web site

1  Choose a domain name

2  Find a server to host your site

3  Add the content to your web site

How to choose a domain name

You first decide on what you wish to follow the www.

It is best to go for something short and easy to remember.  Naturally, it should be related to the product you are selling.

There are are dozens of companies that will offer and register the name for you

Once registered you pay a yearly subscription of as little as £10 to keep ownsership of the domaine name. You will sent a reminder when the renewal becomes due.

Failure to pay the renewal fee results in loss of the domain name as it can be resold to another buyer.

Next you will need a server you will provide web space and who will host your site for you

There is always a technical advice service available should you run into problems or your web site crashes

Unfortunately, even the best servers have downtime when their own facility suffers a virus or 'comes under attack' so be prepared . Normally, if the server goes down it normally gets repaired quickly and you are up and running in a hour or two.

The last thing you need to do is add the content to your site. Again, there are choices ranging from using a simple program such as Front Page to others that are more sophisticated such as Dreamweaver, etc.

You will need to decide on graphics and well as written content. The greater the use of grapics the slower the site is likely to come up when clicked on by students or potential students.

The thing is to get your message across in a concise and clear manner by stating who you are and what you are offering.

If you wish to purchase a ready made web site or easy to use templates then you can do this through us

Some schools offer set courses which the students sign up for and attend at specified times. Other schools 'sell' their students credits which the students are free to use when and how they wish.

You will want to set up an e bank facility to enable you to take payment by credit card in a secure mode. There are many reputable companies that offer secure online credit card processing such as World Pay and Pay Pal. Naturally you will pay a charge for each transaction and this has to be bourne in mind when determining your costs and fee structure. You will also have students who wish to make payment by cheque or bank transfer. If you accept bank transfer you will need to ensure that bank charges at either end are paid for by the student otherwise you will have a shortfall in the fee received from the student.

Money Bookers www.moneybookers.com offer a very easy to set up system where students can pay directly from their credit card to the school or teacher they are with

You then find a server to provide the web space and to host the site.  You can do this through us as we offer a low cost service in this area

You now have a web site but do you have a presence on the web. You want to be seen by students when they use search engines to find an online school or teacher.

Getting a high profile on the web is a complex matter. Some search engines charge to place you highon their pages when students type in particular key word.

Well established schools may use a pay per click service such as Overture to ensure they appear on the first few pages of a search engine when a student clicks on a particular key word such as online English or leaning English online etc

You can pay to have a specialist company submit your site to search engines using specific key words. For somewhere in the region of £ 30 a month they will keep your submissions up to date and revise the submission in order to optimise your presence.

If you are based outside of the United Kingdom you will be able to be listed free on local search engines in the country where you are living and have an address

You can also advertise in newspapers, libraries, notice boards in colleges and universities etc.

It is a simple matter though to handle the submissions yourself .It can be a little time consuming filling in the forms.  There are many search engines and directories which will advertise you completely free of charge. It is important to find out the rules as these can vary greatly. If you re-submit too often it can be regarded as spamming and you might end up removed from a listing
