Even using a relatively simple system such as MS Messenger it is easy to get started and to become involved in teaching English to groups or on a 1- 1 basis to students anywhere around the globe.

You will need access to a computer or laptop with a fairly up to date or modern processor. Although it is possible to get by with dial up- broadband is much preferred.

It has become standard to have broadband in the home now and most of your prospective students will have it too.

You should consider joining Skype or a similar system. Skype is free to join and once you have subscribed to you talk free of charge 24 hours a day to any other skype member via the computer. You only need a microphone and headphone or a Skype telephone. Each of the above is available for little more than £20 in the high street.

Once you and your student(s) have both joined you will be able to speak to each other, taking part in real time live interaction and completely free of charge

Skype is suitable for both 1-1 teaching mode or for teaching small groups as there is a conferencing facility with up to four people able to take part at the same time

There is also an upgrade available at a small cost which allows up to 100 people to conference together but with more than four or five students interacting with the teacher there would be considerable management issues

With web cams being utilised the teacher and students may see each other and this opens another dimension

Not all teachers and students would want to make use of a web cam  or perhaps not on a regular basis

However, it does offer the chance to bring the classroom and the class to life by allowing the classmates to see each other and their own teacher

It may also play a role in teaching pronunciation, stress and intonation as the students would be able to view the lips and mouth movements of the teacher

Web cams have come a long way since the days when movement was stilted or the image would freeze and they can now be used with confidence and flair
