ONLINE WORKSHOP 4From Traditional Classroom to Online Classroom
Most of what happens in a face-to-face live classroom can be transferred to a so-called ‘virtual’ classroom. Just pause for a moment and list the types of activities, which you can find in language classrooms all over the world. Task : Modes of Online Delivery Write as many language
teaching activities you can think of in the box below Then compare with ours. You should be able to think of more than we have put here!!
Modes of online delivery Task Now put the activities in to one or more of the categories of online tools below. Some are obvious, such as
drilling. The web cam or telephone medium
would be the obvious choice for this. Many activities would go into all or
nearly all the categories. Now, let us take one or two of these activities and see how we can present and practise these through online teaching using teaching techniques used in the traditional classroom. Presenting new language Look at the lesson plan for a traditional classroom based lesson below and note that in stage 1, the teacher presents the structure of the second conditional -) If we went to Rome, we could see the Coliseum. If +past simple, past modal + present simple)
The topic is travel and sightseeing around major European cities. The teacher would elicit with picture flash cards of famous European city sights e.g. the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Coliseum, Acropolis etc. T: Where’s this?’ Sts: Rome T: have you been to Rome? Sts: yes/no T: Would you like to go to Italy? Sts: yes/no T: Where’s this?’ Sts: Paris T: have you been to Paris? Sts: yes/no T: Would you like to go to Paris? Sts: yes/no T: We could go to Italy or Paris next week. Enrico, Where would you prefer? Rome or Paris Enrico: I would like to go to Paris. T: (Holds up flash card of the Eiffel Tower) Listen… If we went to Paris, we could see the Eiffel Tower (repeats) T: (Holds up flash card of the Coliseum) Listen… If we went to Rome, we could see the Coliseum (repeats) T. Uses all remaining flashcards and repeats structure using different cities and tourist sites. T: Are we going to Rome or Paris next week? Sts: No T: No we’re not. But it is possible but very, very unlikely. It could happen. It is possible but probably will not happen. So if we say ‘If we go to Paris, we will see the Eiffel tower’ we are expecting to visit Paris. It is very likely or possible/probable. If we say,’ If we went to Paris, we could see the Eiffel Tower’, it is possible but not something we expect to happen. Teacher drills students in structure and then builds up substitution table on board.
So this is a typical scene from a traditional classroom. How can this be transferred to an online lesson? If you want to teach your student/s in a similar way, you can use the same materials and teaching techniques. You can use headphones and microphone to speak to your students and they can respond in the same way. You have a board and flashcards Flash cards can be used in the same way either to an individual student or to several students online at the same time by using the whiteboard. Materials for display are easy to find on the Internet before or you can scan photos / pictures into your picture library. Google images is a good place to start. http://images.google.com/imghp?hl=en
Here is a view of the Netmeeting/MSN whiteboard as the teacher builds up flash cards and text.
Choose a structure from the list here and collect appropriate
pictures to use to present the structure to your online student/s. Present simple Past simple Present or past continuous any conditional form some/any Produce the first stage of a lesson
plan showing how you would use these images to teach the structure for the first
time. Show in some detail exactly how you would manage your materials and what
medium/tools you would use. AND post up the answer to the
